Sodium Formate in Portugal
Sodium Formate ($HCOONa$) is extensively used in Portugal’s textile dyeing, leather tanning, and cork processing industries. It acts as an efficient masking agent in chemical processing and a pH stabilizer for the treatment of high-quality fabrics and sustainable leather. In the construction sector, it serves as a chloride-free setting accelerator for concrete, ensuring the structural integrity of bridge piers and maritime infrastructure (Port of Sines) without the risk of steel reinforcement corrosion in the saline Atlantic environment.
Major Applications:
1. Leather industry as tanning agent
2. Oil Drilling field / Oilfield chemicals : In exploratory drilling, high-density saturated sodium formate solution can enhance machines’ high-temperature resistance, prevent rust and exhibit microbial degradation functions. The use of sodium formate helps stabilize the rock layer and reduce the impact on the soil environment during oil explorations.
3. As a de-icer on airport runways due to its effectiveness and less contamination than Salt. It melts the ice rapidly without damaging the asphalt
4. Pulp and paper industry - In production of sodium hydrosulphite / dithionite (a bleaching agent)
